"W & A Snyder, General Merchants" - original acrylic by Lance Russwurm

wasnydergeneralmerchantsoriginalacrylicbylancerusswurm.jpg

Here, I tried to depict that precise instant when the twentieth century first intruded on a horse-drawn world. A smoking. clattering automobile appears on the street of a small, quiet town. A horse shies and people stare as they get their first glimpse of the new-fangled contraption. No one dreams for a moment that what they see is the future. The backdrop is a block of buildings that still exist in St. Jacobs, Ontario. The car is a 1900 model LeRoy, of which some thirty examples were built in Berlin (Now Kitchener, Ontario)

This picture was released as a limited edition print in 1989 under the title "First Encounter -1900"

I have been an artist/illustrator working out of Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario for many years. I tend to specialize in historical and mechanical subject  matter, but I also enjoy doing portraits, murals, airbrush jobs or anything else that comes up. I work mostly in acrylics, oils, watercolours, graphite and ink. I can  take a photo if I have to, and can also do a bit of photo-retouching...but, mostly, I do things the traditional way.
